My wife was up for 3 hours last night looking online about what we could do to remedy the situation we’re in with our air conditioner.
A quick recap:
- We had a “massive leak” 3 years ago in August. Andrea was pregnant. It was over 100 degrees outside. 90 something in the house. Miserable.
- Instead of replacing the part, we got a brand new system installed. Total cost–around $4500
- 18 months later, after our 1 year labor warranty ran out, we had a problem. This cost us $550 to fix.
- 14 months later (now) we had another problem. A slow leak (not unlike what we had 3 years ago, just much slower). We paid $300 for the diagnosis and recharge–but that doesn’t fix the problem. It will be $90 minimum to find the leak. Then, for the labor alone to replace the coil (if it is the coil, which is the most likely place for the leak), it will be a minimum of $800.
Okay, now let me TELL you how livid this made us. $6000 for 3 years of a semi-cool house (we keep it around 77 in the summer!). Basically what it comes down to for me is this: Air Conditioning in Texas is a rip because they know they have you by the cojones.
Well… at least God has blessed us with enough income and a good financial situation so we can handle it. Still makes me cringe, though!
