I struggle when it comes to how the Band works. I know that it takes up a great deal of my time. Much of that time I believe is spent doing what God wants me to do in my life, right now. The band has allowed me to form relationships that are a wonderful addition to my life. At the same time, the band is a musical entity–we play music. I think we play music pretty well. But I still want for people to enjoy and support our music. It seems as though that is something that I am chasing after : other people’s approval.

In reality, people’s approval doesn’t really make much difference. It may mean that the band goes on 3 more years or 10 more years (or no more years), but it’s nothing in the long term scheme of things. Funny, I can’t remember that when we’re at a gig and a whole 6 people show up and we sell 0 CDs. I inevitably find myself wondering what we could do to attract more people or up CD sales. Should we record a new CD of our new (and much stronger) material? Should we work on our stage presence? Marketing? Musicianship? All these questions are basically asking : what can I do to make large groups of people love (or even just like) me.

So, tonight, at this gig that might have 6 people, or 60, I’ve decided to try to focus on what is wonderful about being in a band : having fun with friends and making something you really enjoy for a God that blessed you with those friends and that talent. I hope tonight is glorifying. I hope it’s great. And part of me hopes that 2 people show up, just so I can learn what it is to be satisfied, no matter what the situation.
